Arizona Late season cow hunts in unit 23 usually find the elk moving towards lower elevations in the southern and central parts of the unit. The mountains and canyons to the south and east of the town of Young hold elk all year long, but the population rises as the elk move down from the rim area in early winter.

Hunters have been successful in the past sitting on trails leading to water, if it is a dry winter. Even if the temps are cold, the elk will still come to water, but if the ground is wet or snow covered, you’ll have better luck still hunting or spot and stalk.

When the temps drop, look for elk feeding on sunny, south and east facing slopes early in the morning. If it is a warm winter, concentrate your efforts on the heavy cover associated with North facing slopes.
